Two ways to chat with strangers without your camera: never open it by starting in voice or text, or turn it off partway through a video call without ending anything. What changes, what does not, and what the other side sees.
One is never opening it. The other is opening it and then closing it partway through. OkeDoo supports both, and they are not the same mechanism — so it is worth being clear about which one you want.
| Camera on | Camera off | |
|---|---|---|
| What the browser asks for | Camera and microphone, requested together. | Voice asks for the microphone only. Text asks for nothing at all. |
| What the other person sees | Your camera feed, for as long as it is on. | Your camera area goes dark. They keep hearing you, or reading you. |
| Can you change mid-call | Yes — switch the camera off without ending the call. | Yes — switch it back on at any point. Nothing reconnects. |
| Does the conversation end | No. | No. The call keeps running either way. |
| Is the microphone affected | No — the mic is a separate switch. | No — you can be off camera and still talking, or muted and still visible. |
| Does skipping still work | Yes, one tap, same as always. | Yes, identical. |
| Does it cost differently | No. | No. The free allowance and coin pricing are the same on every channel. |
A shared room, an office, a bed at 2am. Voice mode covers all of it without you having to explain yourself to the person on the other end.
Start on voice, and switch to video later if the conversation earns it. The switch is yours and it takes one tap.
A camera already claimed by another app will not open here either. Text and voice do not need it, so a broken camera is not a broken evening.
That is a complete reason on its own. Nothing about the product treats camera-off as a lesser way to be here.
Turning your camera off stops you being on screen. It does not stop the other person from having been able to capture what was already shown — no product can promise that, and any that does is describing something it has not got. Report and block exist for what people do; they do not undo what has been seen. The reliable protection is the switch, used before rather than after.
